tanning beds?

Are tanning beds ok to use? I know I hear lots about how damaging the sun is. Are they like being in the sun? is it ok to use them sometimes? Are there better salons to go to that are safer?

I am learning about tanning beds as I explore resources for you. Not having known anyone that has used a tanning bed, I have to rely on the literature available and shall share two sites for you to explore. Perhaps another colleague may help too.
A Google site "Tanning Bed Safety" -Skin problems from Tanning beds, was a little lenghty but informative. It also addressed an age limit for safety.
Health Canada has a division called "Consumer and Clinical Radiation Protection Bureau" which addresses tanning lamps.
Tel. 1 613-954-6699 or email ccrpb-pcr(will do an addendum with email correction). It allows you to type in the question.
I wish I could help regarding specific local shops where I could direct you. Alliston does have a location. Could you discuss with your family doctor the pros and cons as related to your skin type.

The correct email address for Health Canada-Consumer Products
Consumer and Clinical Radiation Protection Bureau is:
ccrpb-pcrpcc@hc-sc.gc.ca
If I can help in any way, please let me know. It is good that you explore before you make a decision.

Here's a couple of websites for you:

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/tanning/hq01487

http://womenshealth.about.com/cs/azhealthtopics/a/tanboothworthit.htm

Most self-tanning lotions make a noticeable difference in skin tone in a few days. For a special occasion you could have a friend give you a spray tan. I read somewhere that spray tan is put on the dancers on DWTS.
